Second imperial succession crisis and related civil wars (420-440) (5 Feb 420 Jahr – 5 Feb 440 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The death of Matis V at 22 years of age threw the Empire of Cantegeszo into utter turmoil. No less than 4 claimants - his brother, his uncle, his legitimate eldest son, and his bastard son - all gathered legions to their cause and took up arms to seize the imperial throne by force.

The destructive warfare that followed was only worsened by the ongoing Plague of Matis, which helped increase the death toll of the Second Imperial Succession Crisis until manpower shortages caused an economic recession, and later on several famines.

The Empire of Cantegeszo was brought close to collapse, split between four pretenders all ruling their own rump-empires separately. The uncle and bastard son of Matis V were eventually defeated, leaving only his brother and eldest son to compete for the throne.

The eldest son of Matis perished at the Battle of the Nerengar Fields, allowing his closest friend and companion, as well as his richest supporter, Igmind Janovric, to take control of the legitimist faction.

In 438, while the Cantegeszans were preoccupied with their internal conflicts, Dyitbard was sacked by the Mannish Chieftain Zadijk Nimstra - the brother of Matis V died during the sack of the imperial capital, and his son attempted to continue the civil war in his name after his death, with little success.

2 years later, Igmind I defeated him at the Battle of Vetbard, crowning himself Emperor of the Cantegeszans and ending the Second Imperial Succession Crisis.
