Chinese Secret Group (Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists) began carrying out attacks on foreigners and Chinese Christians. Began in Shandong but spread to Beijing, where the German ambassador was shot. Western population under siege in the British legation for 55 days until broken by Westerners
Causes:
The Chinese hated the 'foreign devils' and their religion and infrastructure, e.g. railways (disturbed dragons) and telegraph wires (poisonous)
The Emperor Guangxu had tried to make reforms to end criticisms of the Qing dynasty but these reforms were opposed by Cixi who seized control of the government and ended the reforms
Cixi encouraged attacks on foreigners to avoid criticism of imperial rule
