The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, with the US Army suffering approximately 81,000 casualties, including 19,246 killed in action. German losses were estimated at 100,000 troops. The Battle of the Bulge was the largest battle fought by the US Army in World War II, and the last major German offensive on the Western Front. The name comes from the shape of the German advance on maps, as they pushed into the Allied lines, creating a "bulge".
