Xiaoping dismanttalled the collective agriculture and supported the idea of small-scale private enterprises. The peasants pushed this further than was expected. Industrial reform progressed, and managers were given greater authority. This opened China to international market and foreign investment. This resulted in economic growth and new prosperity, better diets, low mortality rates, less poverty, massive urban construction.

However, there was a lot of corruption as a result, such as inflation, corruption of officials, gambling, prostitution, street crime, drug addictions.

The communist party was still in power—even with a capitalistic nation. They believed that democracy would disrupt their political stability. The Tianamen Square Massacre is an example of how Xiaoping is not afraid to dismantle any efforts to remove democratic protests.
