FLQ October crisis (5 Okt 1970 Jahr – 28 Dez 1970 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
The October crisis that was Occured because of the FLQ started on the 5th of october and ended on the 28th of december 1970. For many years following the FLQ was a terrorist group who blew up hundreds of mailboxes but on the th of october they took it to the next level when they kidnapped James Cross a british trade commissioner. They had a ransom which included releasing 23 political prisoners and free passage to Cuba and Nigeria but it was rejected although the government was willing to negotiate. In days to come they would kidnap another political figure Pierre Laporte, the Quebec cabinet minister whose address they found in a phonebook. There were many failed negotiations. Pierre Trudeau would ask the military to send soldiers to Ottawa to protect high profile politicians on the 12th. "There's a lot of bleeding hearts around who don't like to see people with helmets and guns. All I can say is 'go ahead and bleed' was Trudeau's response about asking for military help. Four days later Trudeau would implement the war measures act which in the first 48 hours 250 people were arrested. On the 17th Pierre Laporte would be found dead in a car trunk from strangle wounds. A consequence of this event is that Canadian politicians now would travel with bodyguards which was not a thing up to this event.
