Monkeys Dying After Shipment and Autopsy is Performed (1 Nov 1989 Jahr – 2 Nov 1989 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
By November 1st, about a third of the monkeys from the October 4th shipment had died from what was an unknown cause. At the same time, the Reston monkey house's air conditioning had malfunctioned and the building was constantly receiving hot air on full blast. When examined, a portion of the monkeys exerted signs of illness, having squinted eyes, inactive behavior, warm body temperatures, and a runny nose.
On November 2nd, two of the ill monkeys had died overnight and an emergency autopsy was performed. The monkeys who were thought to have died of heat stress had enlarged spleens and missing blood in the intestines. The cause of death in the monkeys was dismissed as simian hemorrhagic fever (SHF). More monkeys from the same location as the October 4th shipment arrived the same day.
