Wiegenlied (Johannes Brahms) (1 Jan 1868 Jahr – 1 Jan 1868 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
Wiegenlied, or better known as Brahms’ Lullaby, is a lied for voice and piano composed by Johannes Brahms composed in 1868. While the piece’s soothing melody is used and heard in countless households throughout history and into the present, the piece is written end to Brahms’ “dear friend, Bertha Faber, when her second son was born” (Linton). Despite the seeming innocence behind the gesture, Brahms had also meant for the lullaby to be “‘a love song being sung to her’” (Linton). Brahms and Bertha had been lovers during their youth and while Bertha had moved on, Brahms had hidden the tune of ‘S’Is Anderscht’ as a counter-melody into the lullaby for Bertha’s son due to the song’s significance to the pair. Like Für Elise, the piece’s most interesting moment occurs in the simple melody at the very beginning of the song. It’s simple and memorable melody has become a classic most associated with feelings of comfort and nostalgia, which is perhaps what Brahms had hoped for when composing the piece.
