Voltaire championed individual freedoms and rights and attacked institutions that supported oppressive regimes. For example, he targeted the French Monarchy and the Roman Catholic Church which he viewed as an agent of oppression. He also resented the persecution of religious and ethnic minorities as well as the censorship of royal officies who could prevent the publishing of works not approved by governmental or religious authorities. Essentially, he argued for religious tolerance, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech.
