Peloponnesian War (1 Jan 432 Jahr v. Chr. – 1 Jan 404 Jahr v. Chr.)

Beschreibung:

An ongoing conflict between Athens and Sparta which involved most of the Greek city-states, notably recorded by Thucydides. Open war began in 431 BCE when Thebes (a Spartan ally) attacked Plataea (an Athenian ally). The Athenian side had a stronger navy and were more financially prepared, whereas the Spartan side had a more powerful land army. In 421 BCE a truce agreement was made between the armies called the "Peace of Nicias" which lasted for six years, ending in 415 BCE when Athenian forces attacked Sicily. The second half of the war led to Athens getting progressively weaker and more democratically unstable, culminating in 405 BCE when their naval forces were defeated by the Spartans at Aegospotami. This led to Athens' surrender and the end of the Peloponnesian wars.
