Gorlice-Tarnow Offensive (1 Mai 1915 Jahr – 30 Sept 1915 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Recognizing both Russian vulnerability and the need to shore up their Austro-Hungarian allies after the Polish (Lodz) Campaign, the Germans built up a potent Eleventh Army supported by massive logistical depots and a thousand guns between the Galician cities of Gorlice and Tarnow. On 2 May they attacked on a narrow front, supported by a tremendous artillery barrage and Austro-Hungarian armies attacking to their left and right. They broke through the Russian Third Army, effectively destroying it, and continued their advance deep behind Russian lines. Further attacks broadened the offensive, forcing Russian withdrawals from Poland and all along the front. By 30 September the Germans and Austro-Hungarians had advanced 300 miles to a front roughly defined by Riga, Dvinsk, Minsk, Tarnopol and the Rumanian border. The catastrophic defeat cost the Russians 2,000,000 killed, wounded, missing or captured. The Austro-Hungarians also suffered heavily, but the Germans, far less so. From this point war-weariness and civil unrest began to grow in Russia, a problem that eventually became much worse.
