Andrew Jackson had been shoring up defenses in Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana. He invaded Spanish Florida and seized Pensacola to end British occupation in the area. When the British attacked New Orleans, Jackson and his forces, including Creoles, aristocrats, free African Americans, and the Barbary pirates, defeated the British, killing or wounding around 2,000 British soldiers.
