In 1803, President Jefferson asked Congress for $2,500 to send a mapping and scientific expedition to the far northwest.

The expedition, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, was tasked with exploring the newly acquired territory and gathering information about its geography, flora, and fauna.

The expedition consisted of nearly 50 men and lasted from 1804 to 1806.

The Expedition's Route
