Roman Catholic authoritities undertook massive reform efforts in order to combat new sects of Christianity. The Council of Trent was an assembly of bishops, cardinals, and other church offcials who met to discuss matters of doctrine and reform. They defined the elements of Roman Catholic theology by drawing on the works of St. Thomas Aquinas.
