14th Century Arab traveler. Visited Kilwa, Mogadishu and Mombasa. Recorded his impressions of the East African ports in the 1330’s. Battuta also traveled as far east as China. His records provide a detailed account of late medieval trade in the Eastern Hemisphere. He also traveled across the Sahara and visited the kingdom of Mali where he described the city and animals like hippopotami.
