824 – 1515 AD: The Kingdom of Navarre, originally known as the Kingdom of Pamplona, was a Basque kingdom straddling the western Pyrenees between present-day Spain and France. Emerging around Pamplona during the early Iberian Reconquista, it formed as a buffer against the Carolingian Empire and the Ummayad Emirate of Córdoba. In 824, Íñigo Arista became its ruler, opposing Frankish expansion and initially acting as a vassal to Córdoba. The kingdom experienced territorial shifts and dynastic changes, including periods under Aragonese and French rule. In 1512, Ferdinand II of Aragon conquered its southern part, which was annexed to the Crown of Castile in 1515. The northern part joined France by personal union in 1589 under Henry IV and merged into the French kingdom in 1620. The title "King of France and Navarre" persisted until the French Revolution and briefly during the Bourbon Restoration.
