1043 - 1099 AD: Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as El Cid (the Lord) or El Campeador (Master of the Battlefield), was a Castilian knight and medieval Spanish ruler. Born in Vivar near Burgos, he fought for both Christian and Muslim armies. He dominated the Levante (Eastern) region of the Iberian Peninsula in the late 11th century, briefly ruling the Taifa of Valencia from 1094 until his death in 1099. His wife, Jimena Díaz, held Valencia until it was recaptured by the Moors in 1102.
