Causes:
1. The League of Nations was formed at a Paris Peace Conference to prevent another big conflict
2. To become an international peace keeping corporation
3. Settling international disputes through negotiation and in a peaceful manner
4. Was a covenant in the Treaty of Versailles
Effects:
1. When agreeing to become a member, the states had to reduce their military weapons, and comply to international law
2. The U.S. congress was resistant in joining the League as it meant they were legally obliged to intervene in conflict particularly involving Europe.
3. The U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson, despite founding the League, did not officially join the League of Nations due to oppositions in U.S. Congress disagreeing
4. Members of the League were required to enforce military power to protect the League as it was an independent organisation without army or military. However, the League was often left powerless and unable to intervene in conflicts, due to their members being hesitant to do so.
5. The League was left powerless and unable to intervene in a few huge conflicts that lead up to WW2 including the Italian invasion of Abyssinia, the Spanish Civil War, and the Second Sino-Japanese War.
6. In the case of the Spanish Civil War, the member states of the league were reluctant to get involved due to political interests, and/or fear of escalating the conflict and getting putting their citizens in danger. This was usually the case and the reasons the members were hesitant to intervene.
7. The League became a ground for international cooperation on topics like drug trafficking, health, freedom of communications, transit, and other popular issues due to being unable to physically intervene in conflicts.
8. Created inspirations for United Nations entities such as Specialised Agencies
9. The reason the league was created was to prevent another large scale conflict like WW1, however, due to the lack of military forces, they were unable to do so.
