bauhaus (1 Jan 1919 Jahr – 1 Jan 1933 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
the complete opposite of art nouveau. bauhaus had a main focus on functionality while still keeping in mind appearance, but all decoration was abandoned entirely. the look of a design should be effective, yet still basic and simple enough not to take attention away from the product's use and purpose.
communication design (2nd image) -
'architype bayer' typeface by herbert bayer.
the font was designed in 1925 in germany.
this typeface's minimalistic design was to be used on anything from posters to newsprints, though it was never produced nor seen by the masses. its intended audience was very broad, though it was probably targeted more at younger people who were interested in the simplicity reflected by bauhaus.
bayer's design was never manufactured for traditional metal printing presses, but it would have been designed using pencils and ink on paper.
likely because of nonsensical movements like dadaism, the people were beginning to lose faith in art, design and the manufacturing of products so bauhaus attempted to bring these aspects back together and return the purpose of art and design.
historically, mainly medieval and embellished typefaces were used in germany so bayer decided to change this. he created a lowercase, sans-serif font unlike anything seen before with the intention of having a no-nonsense, fuction-only typeface.
'architype bayer' set the tone for sans-serif, minimal fonts.
