During the era of Yoshimitsu, the Muromachi Bakufu was able to control the central provinces.

Yoshimitsu established good trade relations with Ming China. Domestic production increased through improvements in agriculture and the new inheritance system. These changes resulted in the development of markets, towns, and new social classes.

His parents were Ashikaga Yoshiakira and Ki no Yoshiko. He had three children called Yoshinori, Yoshimochi, and Yoshitsugu. He was succeeded by his son Yoshimochi.
