This year, Ramadan began on March 10th and ends on April 9th. Ramadan is a time of fasting and abstinence from sexual proclivity. Ramadan is the 9th month according to the lunar calendar used in Islam.

The word Ramadan is a combination of Ram and Adan. Ram means high, elevated, exalted, grand, etc… We see ram used in the name of Abram, Ab being father + great, Great Father of nations. You can think of an actual ram with horns that is headstrong, though the word translated ram in Hebrew is ayil, aleph yod lamed; the leader guides and teaches with His hand.

Adan (עדּן) is translated time in the book of Daniel, which comes to us in Aramaic.

Daniel 7:25
And he shall speak great words against El Elyon, and shall wear out the qodeshiym of El Elyon, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a period of time (עדּן) and times (עדּן) and the dividing of time (עדּן).

The word adan is also the same as Eden (עדן) in Hebrew and is connected to being Eastward. East is often connected to the idea of where the Sun comes from, especially when the Sun crosses over the Equinox to begin the new year.

Linguistically, Ram Adan could be considered a Great Time. March is the time for spring, new life beginning, conception, and is also historically known for wars, think of the Ides of March, marching into battle. Winter is fading and it becomes more conducive for going to battle. Just think, if a bunch of young men have been restrained from sexual intercourse for a month, they may be a little bound up, a little anxious, and ready to march, ready for battle. It’s not a coincidence that Mars is the god of War and where we get the word March. Mars is just the syncretized version of the Greek Ares. This all points to Aries, the lamb or ram constellation, a time of slaughtering when an offering is made so the angel of death Passes Over and doesn’t destroy the people of the land. It’s also not coincidental that we in the US pay our taxes, our offerings at this time of year, so the bad men don’t come and get us.

As we begin a new year in this moedim season, may we offer ourselves as living sacrifices, as a lamb without spot, in service to one another and may YHUH’s mercy and grace be upon us for another year, and may the hand of the enemy be stayed so that he may raise us up to new life throughout the year.
