Beschreibung:
The Altar of the Kings, located in the Metropolitan Cathedral, was constructed and designed by Jerónimo de Balbás from 1718-1725. It was guilded and finished by Francisco Martínez In 1736. The Altar is one of three in the Metro Cathedral, located at the back of the cathedral. It is 45.1 ft wide, 82 ft tall, and 25 ft deep. As discussed by Dr. Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank and Dr. Steven Zucker, there are three main vertical bodies, known as estípite columns which are unique the Baroque style of architecture. The Altar is a combination of framed paintings, gilded architecture, and painted sculptures, blending all three modes into one. There are elaborate depictions of queens, princesses, Christian kings, God the Father, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Family, and more. The Altar is attributed with fueling a new form of nationalism and patriotism in New Spain, as the Cathedral was meant to unify the Indigenous, creole, mestizo, and European populations.
