The PLO had been buying long range artillery from the USSR, and Israel needed to stop missile attacks on Galilee. The Israeli PM, Sharon, found an excuse to invade Lebanon when 3 Palestinians attempted to assassinate the Israeli ambassador in London.

Israel's aims were to:
- surround PLO HQ in Beirut to expel them
- install pro-Israel Chistian Phalange leader, Gemayel, as Lebanon's president
- make 45km buffer zone in Lebanon

70000 troops, along with tanks and jets, invaded Lebanon as part of 'Operation Peace for Galilee'. Israel exceeded its aims and bombed towns, killing 12000 Lebanese. They besieged Beirut and the PLO moved to residential areas. Israel bombed these areas, killing 20000 Lebanese. As a result, Hezbollah formed in Lebanon.

The USA, France and Italy aided the evacuation of the PLO in August, and the PLO set up their HQ in Tunis, Tunisia.

Gemayel was made president then assassinated (not by the PLO), so the Israelis sent the furious Phalange to Palestinian refugee camps to find PLO fighters. 3500 Palestinians were tortured and killed over 2 days; the Israeli forces knew of the crimes, but didn't commit them themselves.
