 By 1087, less than 5% of England was owned by Anglo-Saxons. 
How Anglo-Saxons lost land:
-Forfeit
Landowners lost land as a punishment for disloyalty and it was given to loyal Normans. 
-New Earldoms 
The creation of the Marcher Earldoms meant many Anglo-Saxons lost land.
Land Grabs-
This was an illegal method of taking land, but caused many Anglo-Saxons to lose land. 
Changes to Landholding:
Anglo-Saxons:
-Bookland
Landholders had a document declaring their right to land, this could be sold or passed on.
-Leases
Land was loaned in exchange for money for a set amount of time. 
William:
-William owned all the land in England, and people held tenure directly from the king. 
-Anglo-Saxons had to pay for the right to keep their land, whereas Normans didn't.
-If landholders died without an heir, the land returned to William.
-Heirs who inherited land had to pay tax.
Tenants-In-Chief:
-Could reallocate land of thegns who had died.
-Could replace disloyal thegns.
