Rebellions occurred throughout Europe. In France, Spain, Portugal, and some of the German principalities, revolutionaries inspired by liberalism called for constitutional government based on popular sovereignty. By the mid-1830s authorities had put down the uprisings elsewhere, but in 1848 a new round of rebellions shook European states. The uprising of 1848 brought down the French monarchy and seriously threatened the Austrian Empire, where subject peoples clamored for constitutions and independence.
