The English political philosopher held that society was a compact between a people's ancestors, the present generation, and their descendants as yet unborn. Burke approved of the American Revolution, which he took as an example of natural change in keeping with the historical development of North American society, but he denounced the French Revolution as a chaotic and irresponsible assault on society
