He captured the city, but the tsar withdrew and refused to surrender. A coalition of British, Austrian, Prussian, and Russian armies converged on France and forced Napoleon to abdicate his throne in April 1814. 1815 he escaped from Elba, returned to France, and reconstituted his army.
