The North Vietnam government was fighting to unify Vietnam and drive out outside countries, such as the French. The United States supported the government of South Vietnam, who were led by Diem at first. The U.S. saw it as necessary to send troops to fight the Communist forces in the North to fight against Communist North Vietnam, the Viet Minh, which used guerilla tactics by the Viet Cong.
