Frustrated over Mai 68 and France's inability to reform, Jean-Louis sees his mandatory military time as a way to leave. He leaves his family and France with Dominique in 1972 to work in Algeria as a French cartographer. He doesn’t decide to go back to France until 1976 after having Florence.
