Sporadic fighting remained after the six day war, eventually leading to the Yom Kippur War. The invasion began on Israel's holy day of "Yom Kippur". Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and Syrian forces crossed into the Golan Heights. Israel was caught largely off guard. The Arab armies had initial success but, Israel was able to push into Syria and encircle Egypt's army albeit with heavy casualties.
