- more food production = better nutrition = families expanded = population increase
- famine was China's biggest threat until the 1960s
- sons were favored over daughters
    - only a son could perform religious rituals
    - son would raise his own family under his parents' roof
    - females were not valued- female infants were often killed
- wives supervised the education of kids & family finances
Merit-based civil service examination system: China was a meritocracy but Japan was more feudalistic
Cultural Developments: everything based on traditional forms
- most artists painted traditional styles: technique > creativity
- drama was popular entertainment: presented Chinese history & cultural heroes (helped unify Chinese society
