The Cuban Missile Crisis was a two week period of very high tensions between the US and USSR. The USSR was moving missiles in to the newly communist Cuba, and that was far too close for the US's comfort, so Kennedy offered the Soviets an ultimatum- to pull out of Cuba or engage in nuclear war. For the two weeks that Cuba did not pull their missiles out the world lived in constant fear of nuclear destruction.
