Theatre (Overview) (1 Jan 2 Jahr v. Chr. – 1 Jan 1930 Jahr)

First indication of theatre was in the Mahābhāṣya by Patañjali
Flourished between the 1st century and the 10th (a peaceful time, which hundreds of plays were written), until it was forbidden under Islamic Rule in the 10th and 11th centuries
After that, village theatre was encouraged, even in regional languages from the 15th-19th centuries.
Modern theatre was developed under the period of colonial rule/British Empire, from the mid-19th century to mid-20th century.
Women and men could be actors, unlike Greek/Roman theatre, but some things were off-limits for men to portray
Traditionally based on the Aryan Caste System:
Four Groups - Brahmins, the Kshatriyas, the Vaishyas and the Shudras
Performed on sacred ground by trained priests for education/entertainment
Rasa: idea of aesthetics; theory that any piece of visual, literary, or musical art could evoke a feeling or emotion of the audience that could be felt, but not necessarily explained.
Two genres: Nataka (based on mythology and heroic tales) and Prakarana (based on fictitious stories and less important characters).
