Theologian of the Bible St. Thomas Aquinas was a Dominican priest. He took seriously the proverb from the Middle Ages that "grace does not set aside or destroy nature; it perfects and builds upon it." Since good Scriptural theology deals with these similar subjects, Thomas reasoned that since philosophy is the field that explores what we may know naturally about God and humans, excellent philosophical analysis and argumentation are necessary for good philosophical theology. Although Thomas wrote some writings that were purely philosophical, the majority of his philosophical thinking may be found in the framework of his study of Scripture. Thomas does, in fact, engage in philosophical study even in his sermons and Biblical commentaries
