Over the course of his presidency, Reagan greatly increased defense spending to try and challenge communism around the world without provoking war. Money went to new technology and weapons, including nuclear weapons. This was the largest peacetime military buildup in U.S. history. This was part of the Reagan Revolution, which was a policy of changing everything economically.
