The shortest-lived era of the DC timeline, Infinite Frontier served to reintroduce the notion of an infinite Multiverse, now referred to as the Omniverse, back into the DC timeline, after having not existed since Crisis on Infinite Earths. In the fallout of Death Metal, the omnipotent multiverse-creators known as The Hands reestablished the Infinite Multiverse for the first time since before its almost-total collapse in Crisis on Infinite Earths. During this time, a new, Multiversal Justice League is formed known as the Justice League Incarnate, which is comprised of various heroes from across the Multiverse with the goal of protecting the Greater Omniverse from villains powerful enough to threaten it. One of these villains is Darkseid, who has been reborn after the events of Death Metal and is seeking out the omnipotent power known as the Great Darkness, which is powered by all that does not exist. Just before Darkseid can obtain this power however, it is stolen from him by another interested party, Pariah, the sole survivor of the first universe destroyed in the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Upset that his universe was not restored in the aftermath of Death Metal, Pariah seeks to use the power of the Great Darkness to restore his lost world, at the cost of destroying the current multiverse. To avoid resistance, Pariah uses the power granted to him by the Darkness to completely wipe out both the Justice League of Prime Earth and the Justice League Incarnate, a tragedy which kicks off the Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, the event which would see the next generation of the Multiverse's heroes fight against the forces of Darkness for the fate of the Multiverse. At the end of the conflict, the Justice League of Prime Earth and the Justice League Incarnate are revived and the Infinite Multiverse is not only saved, but is doubled, so that each universe has both a modern, post-Death Metal version and a retro, Pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths version of itself.
