Aurelius Augustinus. The training he receives in Carthage is that of the Roman scholars of the time, even if his writings reveal a sensitivity and traits linked to his region of birth. While he is a master of the Latin language and culture , he never actually masters Greek , which has the effect of romanizing Western Christianity and giving it a different tone from Eastern Christianity , closer to Greek authors.

Born of a deeply pious mother , he was first passionate about philosophy , then seen literally as a "love of wisdom ", before becoming a Manichean . He abandoned Manichaeism to convert to Christianity quite late, in 386, after meeting Ambrose of Milan . After his conversion, he became bishop of Hippo (present-day Annaba in Algeria ) and engaged in a series of controversies, first against the Manichaeans, then against the Donatists , and finally against Pelagianism. These controversies fuel a considerable work both in quantity and in quality in which three particularly well-known works stand out: The Confessions , The City of God and The Trinity. .
