After 10 long years, The People's Champion once again became WWE Champion at the Royal Rumble by defeating the longest-reigning champion of the last 25 years, CM Punk. The Second City Savior originally won the match with help from The Shield, and the rules stipulated that the champion would be stripped of the title if that occurred. But before Mr. McMahon could take the championship away from Punk, The Great One demanded the bout be restarted and landed a People's Elbow to secure the WWE Championship for an eighth time, ending Punk's astounding 434-day reign.
