Goal: clear the remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society and preserve communism as the dominant ideology

Wanted to destroy the four olds: old things, old habits, old ideas, and old customs.

Included the Red August massacres.

Included Struggle Sessions: Violent public spectacles where people were accused of being ‘class enemies’ (public humiliation and physical assault), usually conducted in workplaces, classrooms or auditoriums. Students were pitted against their teachers, children against parents.
