The Suez Canal is a valuable waterway that controlled 2/3 of the oil used by Europe.

Built and run by a British-French organization.

Seized and nationalized by President Nasser of Egypt.

British, French and Israelis planned to re-take the canal.

USSR supplied arms to Egypt because they wanted a foothold in the Middle East

Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev threatened to rain down nuclear missiles on Western Europe of the British, French and Israeli forces didn't withdraw.

US President Eisenhower pressured Western powers to withdraw and threatened economic sanctions. The forces complied and withdrew.

The Suez Crisis was the first use of UNEF, proposed by Lester B. Pearson.

Britain and France's influence as world powers weakened, the US and Soviet Union took a more powerful role in global affairs.
