part of this group)
- 97% of the population made up the 3rd estate
= Proletariat and Bourgeoisies
* The 1st and 2nd estate did not pay taxes

Causes of the French Revolution
- Estates system (mostly the bourgeoisies)
- Government
= Lewis the 16th (XVI) - wants to people to
love him
- absolutist (divine right to rule)
- Marries Marie Antoinette
*from Austria (ruled parts of the HRE)
* Was an arranged marriage
* Spends a ton of money on outfits

- Tax Structure
- all paid by the 3rd estate

- Economic Problems
- Starving peasants revolt
*there were issues growing grain and that led
to most of their money going to buying
bread

- Government Debt
- They borrowed a lot of money to help the US
with the Revolution
- 1789 the Government was paying 1/2 of the
national budget on interest of the loans
