Summary: Sir Gawain, one of the knights of the round table, and King Arthur's nephew chooses to challenge the Green Knight in Arthur's place. He cuts the head of the knight off with the promise that they will return blow for blow. The knight puts his head back on and tells Gawain to come to his home at the same time next year. Gawain deals with the fact that he could stay and be a coward, but it is his duty as a knight to keep his oath, so he sets out on what is surely a death mission to the chapel of the Green Knight. He finds a place in the woods, a king with a red beard offers him a place to stay and is nice to him. The king of the place goes hunting, first for deer, then a boar, then finally a fox. Meanwhile, the king's wife tries to seduce Gawain, and he has to deal with his duties as a knight and a guest and accept her kisses but also not get in trouble. He gives the kisses he gets to the dude in charge. At the end he goes to die and realizes who the Green Knight is. The green knight forgives him for his sins, he goes back to his friends, and they all wear girdles like Gawain chooses to do.
