Beschreibung:
Established by Ismail (who was 15 or 16 when he took control). In 1502 he announced himself to be Shan. This empire rose to power because of the strong military (land-based).
They were mainly Shi'ite Muslims. This led to tensions with the Ottoman Empire (they were Sunni). Like in the Battle of Chaldiran (1514) where the Ottomans and the Safavids this led to great Safavid losses and continues tensions between the two nations. As well as trade issues caused by embargoes against Safavid silk.

*** Under Shah Abbas Northwestern Iran, Caucasus Mountains, and Mesopotamia came under the Safavids***
