- Influence of exploration by the Europeans to avoid the Ottomans because at the beginning of there rule they were very competitive

Devshirme System
- the purpose was to staff the military
- The staffing was provided through this tributary system that took boys from the ages of 8-20
- These boys were educated in military tactics
- They then could receive high ranking jobs
