The Tokugawa Shogunate in Japan (1 Jan 1600 Jahr – 1 Jan 1826 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The Tokugawa Shogunate unified Japan and laid a foundation for political stability. It implemented the Bakufu, which was meant to be a temporary military government, but instead existed for 200 years. The shoguns sought to control the daimyo, powerful lords who ruled most of Japan. They required that Daimyo spend every other year at the Tokugawa court, as a means of reducing their ability to spend money on a military that might oppose the Tokugawa. The shogunate feared Europeans destabilizing Japan by either invading or providing weapons to the Daimyo, so they severely reduced trade. Agricultural production thrived during this time period because of new crops, methods of irrigation, and use of fertilizer. Later, contraception, late marriage, and abortion but especially infanticide reduced birth rates. The shogunate followed a confucian social hierarchy and encouraged neo-confucianism. However, many sought to emphasize the study of Japanese classics and Japanese scholars. The floating worlds were also important as pleasure quarters with theaters, teahouses, brothels, etc..
