The Mughal empire in India was an Islamic empire that arose from Babur, a turk who claimed to be descended from Genghis Khan and Tamerlane. He used gunpowder weapons to conquer India, which he hated. He wanted to re-create the mongol empire, but instead created the Mughal empire, which was greatly strengthened by his grandson, Akbar. He consolidated power and pursued religious tolerance. He encouraged a syncretic religion known as the divine faith. His descendant Aurangzeb mucked it all up by using military power to enforce Islam. Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal to honor his dead wife, and planned to build a matching mausoleum for himself, but it was never built.
