Located in the Highlands of northern Ethiopia, Axum became a Christian society in the fourth and fifth centuries. Arab conquerors tried to bring Axum into the realm of Islam, but it stayed independent, but cut off from other Christian nations. Despite this, it was the most prominent port in east Africa from the sixth to the ninth century, maintaining its independence through trade.
