Born in Drummonsdsville (later named Niagra Falls, Canada) he studied piano at age 5, and moved to New York where he served as organist at the British Methodist Episcopal church between ages 16 and 21 (the church is now named after him). First African-American to receive a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College Conservatory. He taught all over the country, and served as chair at the Lincoln Institute. He wrote mostly choral works that were based on African-American spirituals.
