The son of a maestro al cembalo at an Italian theatre, Luigi studied music from a young age, composing his first cantata at the age of 14, and continuing to study until he was 18. He continued to compose operas, gaining considerable fame with operas composed for and presented in Florence, Rome, and Venice. He was appointed resident composer of the King’s Theatre in London in 1784, then relocated to Paris to write and teach music (especially opera). He also had success with church music including a Requiem, and 12 masses.
