The Reagan regime and it's grassroots, conservative coalition, the New Right, played a significant role in increasing American political polarization. The Reagan Administration's conservative policies targeted Americans who were impacted by the social and political transformation in the 1960's and 1970's. The administration placed an emphasis on limited government, free markets, and traditional values which resonated with an increasing number of Americans as they looked to find stability in a changing time. However, the policies created by the Reagan Administration and lawmakers at this time had an equally strong opposition from liberals and Democrats as they perceived these policies as a threat to the progressive social policies that they had fought for. The Reagan Administration called for stronger national defense and warned of they believed to be the dangers of a big government, which further divided the American public among partisan lines. The conservative New Right Coalition placed a focus on social issues such as religious rights, abortion, and gun rights. This marked the mobilization of a grassroots conservative movement that created animosity between Democrats and Republicans. The polarization that came from the Reagan regime and New Right coalition deepened the divide caused by political polarization in America.
