The American Revolution established a new, independent nation. However, it was also the event that sparked political polarization amongst Americans as we know it today. The American Revolution created a deep divide between those who were still in support of the British Crown and those who were seeking to establish American independence. This political, social, and economic divide was the source of many debates and a conflict that continued to be present in society long after independence was declared. Society was polarized even into the drafting and ratification of the Constitution, which further perpetuated polarization in this issue. In this case, Federalists were arguing for a stronger centralized government, whereas the Anti-Federalists were advocating for stronger state power. The division along ideological lines clearly marks political polarization even in early American independence.
